Black Warrior 50K or Bust

I had a lousy summer... heel pain, bad decision on some shoes, and overall loss of speed. Good shoes, good stretches, and speed work have put me back on track. The summer was not a complete washout. I achieved my goal of finishing my first triathlon. I made it, but it was not pretty. The summer and fall are behind me and I am ready to move ahead.

I turn 50 in February 2010 (50 is the new 30), so I have been wanting to do something that will test my stamina and fitness. I signed up for the Black Warrior 50K. I figure 50 years old and 50K have some symmetry. I have felt good this fall and I have been maintaining and adding to my base mileage. Train for this will help me stay motivated and even help me prepare for this spring's races.

So 50K or Bust.

I ran the Black Warrior 25k last year and will run the 50k this year,lots of fun!!What kind of shoes hurt your heel? Did you go back to the Pegasus?

I was sold a structure/support pair of Nikes. They made my knees hurt just walking in them. Over the years with trial and error, I found that the custioned high arch shoes work well for me. So much for running shoe stores and video cameras. They are only as good as those who interpret the data. The shoes just set me back by the wasted money.

I am looking to buy some Trail Nike Alvords I think. Air Max Motos are my mainstay.

BW 50K - I am still curious about the water crossings and the amount of mud.

Lots of mud. If the trail is frozen be careful because you will twist your ankle in the horse tracks that are dug into the trail because of their body weight. One water crossing that will get your feet wet with normal conditions. If we have rain the night or day brfore.... all that goes out the window..ya know? I usually run the course a couple of times before the race since I live pretty close by.

Sorry,This is Mike Mac. We met at the Jesse Owens 10k back in May.I can never seem to post right on this blog while trying to use a name.So anonymous works good for me. I blog with Eric Schotz and Jon Elmore.I was hesitant to say because I gave you a shoe recommendation at the 10k and then you had heel trouble....my fault? I guess if it anin't broke,don't fix it.

How many miles and runs did you do to prepare?

Mike the heel pain started before I changed shoes. The shoes were and atempt to help the heel pain.
Yes if it aintbroke dont fixit.

40- 50 miles a week,3 weeks and month with one easy week a month (say 20) for a least 2 months.Also learn to walk some at a fast pace. You WILL be walking some on the trails so you might as well get good at it.

I have had the same heel pain all summer. I cant seem to shake it. Eric seems to think that I put too many miles on my shoes before I buy new ones.It hurts at the start of the run and on long runs near the end. When I wake in the morning or night.....it takes a while to be able to walk without a limp. But you already know about that I'm sure.

I use powersteps insoles and change shoes about every 300 - 350 miles. Some times less if they make my knees hurt. There are some stretches also. I put the insoles in all my shoes.
